This is the moment two wild monitor lizards wrestled for dominance next to a pond.

Footage shows the large reptiles fighting next to the water in Thailand’s northeastern Nakhon Ratchasima province on December 31. The two males were locked in a fierce battle as one tried to exert its power over the other.

The giant lizards were trying to win the affection of a female monitor lizard as their mating period coincides with Thailand’s cooler winter season.

Male monitor lizards tussle with each other for mating rights to females, which normally wait nearby for the victor to emerge.

Asian water monitor lizards live in canals and ponds in large cities in Thailand where they feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.

They are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite which sometimes carries harmful bacteria.
