An adorable baby cow in Thailand has six legs – with two growing from its back.

The black-and-brown female calf named Pee-Mai was born in Trang province on New Year’s day.

Shocked farmer Arom Sanuksanan, 49, picked her up from the ground and noticed two extra limbs protruding from her back.

Neighbours believed the cow would not live long due to its abnormalities but determined Arom believed she was a sign of good luck and tirelessly tended to her.

Footage taken on Monday January 5 shows Pee-Mai roaming around the grass and grazing while the two extra legs dangled from her withers. The lively calf did not appear to have any issues moving, even running away when a child chased after her.

Proud owner Arom said: ‘Her mother gave birth to the calf so easily like other average baby cows, so I was surprised when I saw that she had extra legs. She can walk, eat and run like other cows so I think she is healthy.

‘I believe the cow was born on New Year’s day to give luck to me. I will never sell this cow to anybody, even if the price offered is high, and I will take care of her until she dies of natural causes.’

Pee-Mai is believed to be suffering from Polymelia, a birth defect that causes more than the usual number of limbs. Scientists believe that it could be a genetic condition.

A study in Switzerland in 2002 found that Polymelia is extremely rare but not fatal. Researchers said that out of every 100,000 cattle born worldwide, fewer than four have extra limbs.
