Floods and Landslides Hit a City in Indonesia Seven People Died
Due to heavy rains that flushed the city of Jayapura, the capital of Papua Province, Indonesia, causing floods to hit the area.
Heavy rain since Thursday (6/1/2022) night until Friday (7/1/2022) in the morning not only caused flooding, landslides also occurred.
At least seven residents in the area were reported to have died as a result of being buried by landslides and collapsed buildings due to landslides. A number of people were injured.
All victims, both dead and injured, have been evacuated to Bhayangkara Hospital, Papua Regional Police for post-mortem and the injured have received intensive medical treatment.
As many as a thousand more residents whose areas are affected by floods and landslides currently choose to evacuate to a safe place and their relatives.
The local government is assisted by the SAR team and the Police and the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) work hand in hand to help the people trapped by the flood.
The location of the worst flooding was in the Youtefa Market area, Abepura, Jayapura.
The joint SAR team continues to help evacuate residents and traders trapped in the location.
Deputy Mayor of Jayapura, Rustam Saru, who went directly to monitor the evacuation process for residents trapped in the flood, said. Floods and landslides were caused by very high rainfall from Thursday (6/1/2022) night to Friday (7/1/2022) this morning, as a result, as many as six districts in the Jayapura City area were hit by floods and landslides.
According to Rustam, BASARNAS and volunteers have carried out inspections at a number of disaster locations, including floods and landslides where the joint SAR Team and volunteers have handled the mapping process and handling the victims.
According to Rustam, BASARNAS was dispatched to the Youtefa market to save the residents and traders who were trapped in the flood where there were approximately hundreds of people trapped in the flood disaster that hit the Youtefa market area.
Rustam continued that the Jayapura City Government also prepared ready-to-eat food and temporary shelter for victims of floods and landslides.
"The state is here for the people who experience disasters. We prepare ready-to-eat food for the residents affected by this flood. The evacuation of victims continues to be carried out because in this market a lot of residents and traders are trapped due to being surrounded by floods." said Rustam Saru, Deputy Mayor of Jayapura.
Until now, the local government continues to collect data for residents who have been affected by floods and landslides as well as repairing a number of clogged drains that cause water to overflow and become flooded.
The local government also continues to establish disaster posts and prepare shelters for residents affected by the floods and landslides.
