Eight students rescued after trapped on fast river when they saw Rafflesia Arnoldi flower in an Indonesian canyon
Eight Indonesian students was rescued recently after trapped by a fast-flowing river at the bottom of the canyon, West Sumatra province.
Footage filmed in the early hours of this morning (December 9) on the outskirts of Ngarai Sianok, Bukittinggi City showed a joint team carrying rescue equipment to the canyon bottom to evacuate local children in need of assistance from a depth of about 300 feet.
Officers had to take a detour down the river side to bring all the victims to the surface.
Village official Eko Febriyan said the incident began when 21 local students descended to the canyon bottom to bathe in the river at 11.00 a.m, Saturday, December 8.
After bathing, 13 of them climbed back into the village, while 8 others went to see the corpse flowers that grew a lot around the canyon cliffs.
"When they were looking at the Rafflesia flower, it was raining, and when they were about to go back, they were trapped in a rushing river so they couldn't go home. They called their friends asking to be picked up," Eko Febriyan said.
Residents who picked them up found the eight victims trapped between the river and the cliff wall of the canyon.
Rescue efforts by residents failed because the roads were steep and slippery and they did not have evacuation equipment. Residents finally asked for assistance in the evacuation of the joint rescue team.
Evacuation successful after 6 hours of rescue efforts.
One victim was evacuated in a weak condition and 7 other victims with minor injuries were taken to the hospital.
According to locals, the victims and local residents often descend to the bottom of the canyon to bathe or just explore nature.
However, this is the first time someone has been trapped, because the heavy rain caused the river to overflow.
