Indonesian rangers on Tuesday (January 11) trapped a wild Sumatran tiger suspected of preying on livestock.

Footage captured in Palembayan in the Agam district of West Sumatra showed the snarling big cat in a cage before it was tranquilised and taken to a nearby rehabilitation centre.

The female will be observed in captivity before being released back into a natural habitat away from human populations.

Traps were set in late December after locals said they were terrified of entering the fields after several encounters with a tiger.

Sumatran tigers are extremely rare.

They were listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List in 2008 with between 441 to 679 individuals thought to exist.
