A wild elephant wandered onto a road and stopped traffic in Thailand.

Frightened tourists called Khao Yai National Park staff after spotting the male jumbo ambling along and blocking one lane in Nakhon Ratchasima province on January 8.

Video shows staff riding a pickup truck and trying to guide the large animal named Duan away from park visitors.

Motorists were asked to drive slowly and leave their car engines on. They were also been instructed not to blow their horns as doing so may spook the elephant.

After an hour, the staff managed to corner the elephant and lure it back to the jungle.

Adisak Phusitwongsanuyut, head of Khao Yai National Park, said: ‘Duan is about 20 years old. We believe his tail has been shorter than a regular elephant's since birth.

‘This elephant is naughty. There were times he pushed a tourist’s car because he heard loud honking.’

Thailand has an estimated 2,000 Asian elephants living in the wild but there is often conflict when they come into contact with humans on roads and in villages. A similar number of elephants are kept captive where they work in zoos and are hired out for religious festivals and weddings.
