Poundbury Dorset is an extension to the town of Dorchester. Built on land owned by Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales who wanted to develop a village where people could live, work and play within the development.

He appointed well-known architect and urban planner, Leon Krier, to work on the concept which when finished it will occupy 400 acres of Duchy of Cornwall land.

Krier’s challenge was to create a new extension to the town within the context of traditional Dorset architecture.

Plan divided Poundbury into four distinctive quarters.
Poundbury is designed to create a sustainable community and pleasing place in which people can live, work, shop and relax.
The architecture at Poundbury takes in local styles and drawing on the heritage of Dorset, and in particular the streets in nearby Dorchester.
Parking is generally in landscaped courtyards to the rear of properties.
Included in the development are larger commercial buildings, offices, shops, pubs and cafes as well as social housing.
There is a range of architectural styles at Poundbury with Georgian, Victorian, Arts and Craft buildings to be found around the 21st century village.
Areas have been set aside for play, sports and recreation.
The Fire and Rescue Service has a large base on the edge of Poundbury that serves the whole county if required.
Although Prince Charles is the current Duke of Cornwall the title and ownership of the Duchy will be passed on to Prince William in the future.
