A dog was rescued from an abandoned well in South India on 12 January, after being trapped for two days.

The rescue happened in Sulagiri in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu state.

Rajamani, a farmer, had abandoned a well that was 30 feet (9m) deep, as it was dry.

Unfortunately, it was not fenced off and a dog from the same village fell into the well.

The owner of the dog had been searching for it for two days before a passer-by heard barking coming from the well and saw the dog inside.

Fire and rescue teams were called immediately. They tied themselves with ropes and climbed down into the well, bringing the dog back up with them.

The lucky dog was fed immediately, having gone hungry for two days.

The animal's owner and local villagers thanked the team for their efforts.
