Firefighters in eastern India rescued a large wild boar trapped in a septic tank on January 17.

A team was called to a village in the Jharsuguda district of Odisha after the hefty creature was found struggling at the bottom of the 15-foot concrete tank.

The crew of six firefighters was concerned about approaching the aggressive male boar and so filled the tank with water hoping the animal would climb out on its own.

The boar was so exhausted, however, it couldn't haul itself out and the team was forced to use long bamboo poles to help support the terrified animal.

When the boar finally emerged onto dry land, it rested for a few moments before running off into the jungle.

"We usually get into the pit, tie a rope around the animal and pull it out. But male wild boars are capable of killing humans, so we attempted this unusual rescue. We are happy we saved the animal without any injuries on our side," said firefighter Babul Kumar Rout.
