BALIKPAPAN -INDONESIA, JANUARY, 21, 2022 - A series of collisions involving dozens of vehicles occurred at Simpang Rapak Balikpapan Utara, Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, Friday morning (21/1/2022) at around 06.30 WITA. The successive collisions caused by a container truck that experienced a failed brake caused 4 people to be reported dead and 13 others seriously injured.

From the CCTV footage, the KT 8534 AZ container truck drove from the top of Jalan Soekarno Hatta towards the Rapak intersection. The truck, which had brake failure, hit a number of vehicles that were stopped at a red light.

It was reported that five cars and 10 motorbikes were involved in a collision. After the horrific incident, the police were assisted by residents in evacuating the victim to be rushed to the hospital.

Based on the police statement, the driver admitted that he was carrying a 20-foot container filled with water-cleaning lime with a total weight of up to Rp. 20 tons.

Currently, the Traffic Accident Analysis (TAA) team of the National Police Korlantas is still trying to determine the main cause of the accident.
