Residents were shocked when a river or water and ice surged through homes during an unseasonal hail storm in Chile on January 20.

Onlooker Ruth Mansilla captured the rare phenomenon from her home in Llanquihue province in the Los Lagos Regio.

She said: ‘We were supposed to enjoy our summer. However, the temperature was so low that this happened. It was the first time I’ve seen this in Chile.’

The country’s National Emergency Office issued warnings due to the electrical storms, which is said would be in place until the weather calms down.

Officials said intense rains and hail fell in Llanquihue and Puerto Montt due to a cold core synoptic condition and the phenomenon

Drivers were also warned to be careful due to the heavy hail affecting traffic.
