Large crowds turned out to celebrate Ngaben in Bali, Indonesia, on Friday 21 January.

Ngaben is an important cremation ritual in Balinese Hinduism -- the main religion on the island -- in which the soul of the deceased is released to the upper realm, from where it can be reborn or reach Nirvana.

This Ngaben was for the former 'king' Anak Agung Ngurah Manik Parasara, who died in late December.

In Balinese Hinduism, a good cremation helps ensure the soul is not captured by evil residents of the lower realm on its way to the upper realm.
