Debt-ridden 28-year-old robs bank at knifepoint in southern India

A 28-year-old mechanical engineer allegedly held the bank staff at knifepoint and robbed gold jewelry weighing 1.8 kg (3.9 lbs) and cash worth Rs 3.7 lakh (USD 4,970) from a bank in southern India Karnataka.

The incident, caught on CCTV, took place at the Madiwala branch of the State Bank of India in Bangalore on January 14.

Visuals feature the miscreant ransacking the bank's locker and grabbing the cash and gold. Meanwhile, the terrified employees stand in his proximity, beholding the experience helplessly.

According to records, the 28-year-old had invested money in online trading but incurred heavy losses. Following this, he took huge loans and decided to rob a bank to repay them.

Based on the CCTV footage, a special team led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Madiwala sub-division Sudhir M. Hegde, identified the accused as Dhiraj S., and tracked him down at Yelahanka within four days of the incident and arrested him.
