A Greek ship that sank off the coast of Cape Town 45 years ago has washed ashore in the South African city.

The 'Antipolis' was being towed to the Far East in July 1977 when it broke away and sank.

Last week, strong waves and winds off Cape Town’s coast pushed the remains of the shipwreck ashore close to the Twelve Apostle’s Hotel.

Eddie Andrews, the Deputy Mayor of Cape Town, visited the shipwreck this morning (January 25).

Andrews said the wreck posed no immediate threat to the public, as it was in an inaccessible area at the bottom of a cliff.

He said they had no immediate plans to move it.

The Antipolis, a Greek ship which sank in July 1977, has washed ashore on the coast of Cape Town after 45 years. The ship was being towed to the Far East in July 1977 when it broke away and sank off the coast near Oudekraal.

Last week, as a result of strong waves and winds off Cape Town’s coast, the remains of the ship wreck were washed ashore close to the Twelve Apostle’s Hotel, one of Cape Town’s top hotels.

Eddie Andrews, the Deputy Mayor of Cape Town and the mayoral committee member for coastal management, visited the site of the washed up wreck this morning. Andrews said the wreck posed no immediate threat to the public, as its in an inaccessible area at the bottom of a cliff, and therefore there are no plans to move it at this point.
