Dozens of Palestinian women in the Gaza strip joined a walking marathon to 'break sexism in the world of sports.'

The Muslim women marched along a promenade west of Gaza City on January 22 in the event organised by the Palestinian Federation for Sports Culture. Some of the participants held banners with the message: 'Women have the right to exercise.'

Young girls wearing taekwondo uniforms also joined the marathon, raising placards that advocated normalising female participation in sports.

Hala Al-Husseini, head of the Women's Committee in the Federation, said the group walked a distance of two kilometres in 20 minutes.

She said: 'This day aims to raise awareness of the importance of sports for women, and to break societal stereotypes about the right of women to exercise.'
