Villagers broke thick ice to get fish from a frozen river in northern China.

Video filmed in the city of Ning’an in Heilongjiang Province on January 22 shows villagers using tools to break thick ice and then using a small hammer and a screwdriver to dig the frozen fish out.

According to a villager named Zhang, there was a volcanic eruption 10,000 years ago. After the magma solidified, a volcanic platform formed.

The water flows underground the volcanic platform in summer and goes into the gaps of volcanic rocks in winter, leaving the fish in the frozen layer.

So local residents break the ice to get fish in winter.

The video was provided by local media with permission.
