Dominant wildebeest male shows hyena he's the boss of his territory
It was during an early afternoon safari in the Kruger National Park that we decided to check out the nearby watering holes in our area in search of wild animals. It didn’t take long before a spotted hyena suddenly appeared from out the bush, running across the road while looking a little concerned. It was strange to see a hyena running like that in broad daylight. At first, I thought our vehicle might have spooked the hyena from its resting place but soon realised the hyena was looking over its shoulder at something else coming from behind. The next moment, to our total surprise, a large blue wildebeest male appeared and the hyena quickly turned again to run off a few more meters. It was actually very random and funny to see a hyena, one of Africa’s top predators, running away and being intimidated away by a blue wildebeest, one of Africa’s most preyed upon animals. It was like the dominance roles have switched during daylight hours. The blue wildebeest was in charge the whole time and not once did it even look as if the hyena will turn and attack the wildebeest, even though it was able to do so. The wildebeest even stopped at an open patch to mark his territory, kicking back dust like a real bull, sending the hyena a message. It was hilarious to see that the whole time, the wildebeest only had to casually walk towards the hyena before the predator would burst around in speed as if being chased by a lion before stopping again. The wildebeest just kept walking towards the hyena when it stopped and eventually the hyena just bolted into the bush and disappeared. We were all totally amazed by and somewhat proud of the wildebeest, casually pushing a formidable predator out of his territory.
