Location: Karaikudi, Sivagangai District in Tamilnadu state in South India

Thanksgiving and for the prosperity of the farmers and the agriculturists harvest festival called “Pongal” is celebrated all over South India. But in this village’s harvest festival only men are allowed to participate.

All men from the village and the nearby villages gather together. They dig a small pit from which water oozes out. The water is collected in a vessel and taken to the temple premises for preparation of a sweet dish called pongal (It's prepared from rice lentils and the jaggery.). It is then offered to the god and they pray for a good harvest for the coming years too. No women or even girls are allowed to participate in this festival.
