Myanmar military activists detonate bomb killing two protesters on military coup anniversary
This is the shocking moment military supporters detonated a bomb killing at least two protesters and injuring at least 30 others during a march to mark the anniversary of the military coup in Myanmar.
The device was allegedly planted by activists - veterans and army supporters - while civilians were marching in Tachileik province on Tuesday afternoon February 1.
Violence has become commonplace in Myanmar after the military seized power and ousted civilian leader and democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi in February last year.
The military has accused Suu Kyi of rigging the November 2020 elections, in which her party won by a landslide vote. Now in detention, she faces several legal charges with a combined maximum sentence of more than 150 years in jail.
Anti-military protests have been met with severe violence, with more than 1,300 people killed since last year's coup.
This year, the opposition has called for a 'silent strike' to mark the first anniversary of the junta takeover. However, some 58 business owners who announced their participation were arrested by officers, citing their alleged violation of the country's Counter-Terrorism Law.
Myanmar, also known as Burma, was governed by Britain from 1824 to 1948, during which time it became the second-wealthiest country in Southeast Asia but following independence was ruled by the military until 2011 when democratic reforms briefly began.
