Thai zoo staff performed an underwater lion dance inside an aquarium to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Footage shows performers on a scuba set wearing traditional lion dance costumes while wading under the aquarium on a dancing motion in Chiang Mai zoo on February 1.

The unique show was held for three days which started on January 31 to February 2 to offer for the celebration.

The traditional Chinese lion dance mimics the movement of a lion in a costume that was believed to bring good luck and fortune. The dance is usually performed during the Chinese New Year.

Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year, is the start of a new year based on a calendar that follows moon cycles. In other communities, it is referred to as the Spring Festival.

Thailand’s capital city – which was founded by settlers from the Far East – has a large population of those descended from mainland China. Many moved to other provinces around the country, while in Chiang Mai in the north of the country, Chinese settlers crossed directly from the nearby border.

The 2022 Chinese New Year fell on February 1, the date that marks the beginning of the new moon. Festivities typically last for 15 days until the moon becomes full.
