At least 13 people were killed while dozens more were injured when a bus carrying tourists crashed in Indonesia.

The bus was carrying 47 passengers headed to Yogyakarta province for a holiday when it lost control and plummeted downhill on Sunday afternoon, February 6.

Footage taken near the Mangunan Pine Forest area in the Bantul Regency shows the mangled remains of the bus, which had tilted over and fallen into a roadside gutter.

Officers believe the accident was caused by the vehicle's faulty brakes.

Bantul Police Chief Ihsan said: 'Witnesses we questioned said they saw the driver panicking as he tried to manage the gear stick, so there's an indication the brake was not functioning or faulty.'

He added that 13 people had died, while 34 others - including three toddlers - were injured and have been taken to nearby hospitals.

Purwo Harsono, chairman of the Notowono Cooperative which oversees tourist spots near the accident site, said: 'We are deeply saddened. This is the first accident here after tourist destinations were opened following the COVID-19 pandemic.'

He added that steep and twisting roads make the area more accident-prone.
