A hijab-wearing young Muslim woman was heckled by a Hindu nationalist mob as she arrived at a college in Mandya in India's Karnataka state on Tuesday 8 February.

The mob wanted her to remove her hijab before entering the college. But the girl, far from getting intimidated, held her ground and refused to remove the it.

In a video filmed by a local journalist on Tuesday, Muskan Khan is seen parking her moped outside PES college of Science, Arts and Commerce.

She is then heckled by Hindu members of a right-wing group who shout "Jai Sri Ram" (Hail Lord Ram) and wave saffron scarves at her. The girl reacts by raising her hand and shouting back: "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is Great).

As the mob closed in on her, a few college staff escorted her to safety.

Khan said she was not worried about facing them alone and that she would keep fighting for her right to wear the hijab.

She said the college never had issues with her clothes and outsiders had entered the college to target Muslim girls.

Hindu nationalist mobs are agitating in Karnataka state to make Muslim girls remove hijabs before entering college.

The protests are being resisted by female Muslim students, who are usually very outnumbered.

The state of Karnataka is ruled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
