Hundreds of students at Aliah University in Kolkata, India, took to the streets on Wednesday 9 February in solidarity with Muslim students in Karnataka.

Muslim students in Karnataka state have been protesting against a hijab ban in high schools and pre-university colleges.

The state has now shut high schools and colleges for three days after clashes between Hindu nationalist and Muslim students.

The debate began at a women's college in the state, where six teenage students said they were banned from wearing the hijab. The college says they are only required to remove it in class, but the students say that as they have some male teachers they should be allowed to wear it at all times.

That protest has since spread across the state and the country.
