A young elephant was rescued from an agricultural well in eastern India on Monday 14 February.

Straying from its herd, the one-and-a-half-year-old elephant fell into the barrier-less well in Lalgarh Village, in West Medinipur District of West Bengal.

Video shows the jumbo struggling inside the well, stuck in the compact space while a large crowd of onlookers gathers around.

Later, the elephant rescuers arrive, equipped with an excavator. They dig out a section of the land adjacent to the well, following which they bathe the pachyderm by spraying water on it once it comes out.

The elephant's herd had strayed away from its corridor when it fell into the dried-up farm well.
