A woman has explored an abandoned medieval-themed holiday resort from the 1980s where Joan Rivers is believed to have performed – finding it left largely intact with the guest beds still made, a deserted spa and a dead racoon in the swimming pool.

Gabby, 24, an urban explorer from the US, explored the destination with her boyfriend Sonny, also 24, and believes the holiday spot was abandoned in the 1980s.

While she has chosen not to disclose the location, Gabby said the resort was opened in the 1960s and was “designed to emulate a medieval castle out of the folklore of Robin Hood”.

While it is unclear why the resort was left to rot, the rooms remain remarkably intact – with some guest bedrooms appearing ready for use with the beds made.

Elsewhere, Gabby and Sonny found a lobby with keys to the suites, a large guest gym with treadmills and weight machines “rusting away”, and an indoor pool filled with murky water and sun loungers left in disarray.

The couple also spotted a dead racoon floating in the water – having presumably taken shelter in the abandoned building.

“The room had a very eerie look and feel,” Gabby, who is also a student, told Jam Press.

“While we were looking around the indoor pool section, we noticed that there was something floating in the murky water. When we got closer to the edge of the pool, we realised it was a dead raccoon which we assumed must have drowned.

“On top of this, while I was walking to the opposite side of the room, I discovered another dead raccoon.

“Its body had decayed so much you could clearly see its skull laying on the ground surrounded by fur. Next to this raccoon were three additional skulls.”

After the creepy discovery – which they decided not to film – they made their way to the spa.

Gabby said: “It still had countless massage and salon chairs, and even a private room for facials.

“I found it exciting to walk through its halls as this style and era of resort that was booming so many decades ago is a dying breed.

“I was most surprised by the staggering amount of room keys still left behind in the lobby as this is something I would have expected to either have been disposed of by the owners or stolen by other explorers to the point where none would be left.

“There were easily hundreds of keys between the three drawers that we opened. It’s always fascinating to me to see items like these left behind as they are a direct connection to the living memories of all the families who once vacationed here.”

While there was “significant” decay in many of the rooms, Gabby and Sonny found areas including the theatre still intact with “stunning” colourful walls.

The explorer says performers including Joan Rivers and Jerry Seinfeld had previously appeared on the stage.

She shared clips filmed inside the resort on her YouTube and TikTok, where she goes by UrbexMuse, with her 1.5 million followers.

One user commented: “It’s so sad to see something so beautiful go to rot.”

“I bet it was amazing and grand back then,” another person said.

Someone else added: “All of those memories just tucked away in there.”

“Getting The Shining vibes here,” said another viewer.

Another person commented: “So wonderfully preserved.”

Gabby added: “I feel really grateful that I was able to experience this one-of-a-kind resort prior to its likely inevitable demolition.”
