Protesters converged on the Alley of The Heroes of Heavenly Hundred near Hreshatik Metro Station in Kyiv on Monday 14 February, to urge German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to sanction legislators with Russian interests in Germany.

They also demanded that he not try to persuade Ukraine to surrender, that the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline from Russia to Germany should not be opened, and for Russia to release Ukrainians they say are illegally detained in Russian prisons.

The new German chancellor is in Ukraine for talks with President Zelenskyy, before heading to Moscow to meet Russia's President Putin on Tuesday.

Germany is widely accused of being reluctant to take a firm line against Russia.

Former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder -- whose image the protesters held up -- is a close personal friend of President Putin, is on the board of Russian oil giant Rosneft and has been recently appointed to the board of state gas company Gazprom.
