Fitness influencer reveals amazing postpartum transformation – but urges new mums to ditch the scales after revealing her weight has barely changed.
A fitness influencer is urging new mums to ditch the scales after sharing her amazing postpartum transformation – but revealing her weight has barely changed.
Yanyah Milutinović, 34, from New York, US, gave birth to her second child, Vuk, on 30 June 2021, who she shares with police officer husband Risel Martinez, 31.
The pair also have a daughter, three-year-old Smiljana.
The Instagram star, who has 343,000 followers (@yanyahgotitmade), is a big advocate for working out (safely) during pregnancy, having gone viral for lifting heavy weights while about to pop herself.
Now, having spent the past few months working towards getting her toned figure back again, she has stunned fans again.
Sharing before and after photos of herself, the mum-of-two looks incredible, with her abs once again firmly in place.
However, she then goes on to show the scales, which reveal next to no difference in weight.
"The scale is a liar, and it can only give you a numerical reflection of your relationship with gravity," she wrote in the viral Instagram post.
"That's it.
"It cannot measure hard work, commitment, beauty, talent, purpose, life force, strength, or love. The numbers doesn’t define you.
"It doesn’t show the whole picture; especially when you are lifting weights.
"It doesn’t show what is happening inside your body, how your heart is learning how to pump blood more efficiently, or how your body is creating more mitochondria in response to this new demand, and that your muscles are getting stronger to adapt to your workouts.
"These are things that simply won't show up on a scale.
"It can be a great and useful tool to understand what route you are headed in your fitness journey. But it’s very important to remember that the numbers can be very deceptive, and that YOU ARE MORE than the numbers blinking back at you from the scale."
The post has resonated heavily with women on social media, racking up over 22,400 likes.
“You practice what you preach!! Today in this world that is super rare!!! Extremely admirable!!!!," wrote one person.
“This honestly has given me so much inspiration! I look at the scale way too often!," added someone else.
“LOVE THIS QUEEN!!! Time and time again, I am filled with the utmost respect for you and truly would love to meet you one day and just talk," wrote another user.
A fourth person wrote: "You blow me away!! Such an inspiration."
“What an amazing inspiring post!,” added someone else.
Another person commented: “Incredible!!!!!!!”
"The focus on losing weight is a mistake I often see from mothers, as well as other trainers with their postpartum clients," Yanyah told Jam Press.
"I believe that the discomfort of being in a 'new body' that you don’t necessarily recognise makes you act out of panic and restricting your food, and doing endless hours of cardio.
"This not a great way to keep your hard earned muscle, especially in such physically taxing time such as postpartum."
Back in 2021, Yanyah was 219lbs when she went into labour and lost 29lbs in the four weeks after birth but has stayed at 194lbs while hitting other targets along the way and pushes that her goal was not weight loss.
She believes that a lot of mothers think the solution is to lose weight, and even though it may be for some, it isn't for everyone.
Yanyah said: "For the regular gym-goer, it's often not weight loss.
"After reaching a certain weight, they often deal with not recognising their bodies again.
"I often hear clients, friends and people I know say they wish they would have took a different approach as their lower bodies are skinnier and less developed than what they were prior to falling pregnant.
"And they feel like they have lost a lot of hard earned muscle!"
Since giving birth, the fitness influencers' focus has been to build muscle in the areas that needed it most and not to 'shed pounds'.
She added: "My body fat percentage in the beginning of postpartum was 34%, I knew I could build a decent amount of muscle mass during this time due to that.
"My focus was and is to build areas of my body that needed more growth.
"I built my legs, and my gluteus, eating a very high protein diet, while focusing on heavy lifting following a program that I created specifically to my goals."
