Palestinians in the Gaza Strip held a protest on Wednesday, February 16, to show support for the residents of the Sheikh Al-Jarrah neighborhood - a Palestinian settlement in Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem - where families are facing possible eviction by Jewish authorities.

The protesters trooped to the Memorial Park of the Unknown Soldier in Gaza City, waving the Palestinian flag and holding a banner that read: 'All support for the steadfastness of our people in Jerusalem and Palestine.'

Clashes in the neighbourhood erupted over the weekend when a Jewish home was reportedly attacked with Molotov cocktails.

Tensions escalated even further when far-right firebrand Itamar Ben Gvir, a member of the Religious Zionist party and known for his controversial comments about Palestinians, set up a makeshift office in Sheikh Jarrah in what he claimed was a show of support for the neighbourhood's Jewish community after the incident.

Ownership of East Jerusalem has long been disputed between Israelis and Palestinians. Palestinian leaders want the area to become the future capital of a Palestinian state. However, Israel has effectively occupied the territory and enforced laws to claim Palestinian homes, in a move condemned by the international community.
