A wild Sumatran elephant sparked chaos after wandering onto a toll road in Indonesia.

The male jumbo was crossing the Pekanbaru-Dumai Toll Road, in Riau Province, Monday morning, February 13 when the incident happened.

Several trucks were seen stopping and letting the elephant pass, careful not to agitate the male jumbo by their vehicle's noise.

However, the animal damaged the dividing wall between the toll road and the forest area as it tried to reach the other side of the road.

Onlooker Erwin Nababan said: 'As far as I remember, this is the first time this has happened since this toll road was inaugurated in 2020. There was only one elephant so the damage was only that.'

Technical Head of the Riau Province Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA), Mahfud, said that his team immediately checked the location of the elephant crossing the toll road.

He said: 'Actually, a tunnel has been provided for wild animals but at that time the tunnel was flooded. Maybe that's what caused the Sumatran elephant to go up and cross the toll road.'

The location of the toll road is around the Gian Siak Kecil Wildlife Sanctuary area - one of the habitats and places for the conservation of Sumatran elephants.

Mahfud added that the elephant crossing the road was already being monitored before the incident happened and had been wearing a radio collar.

He said: 'We have checked and the elephant's position was found to be about 4km away from the toll road area.'

No one was reported hurt in the incident.

Sumatran elephants, native to the island of Sumatra, are one of the three recognised sub-species of Asian elephants.
