UK braces for more wet & windy weather as masts of SS Richard Montgomery survive Storm Eunice off Kent, UK

Buy video

The UK is bracing for more unsettled wet & windy weather over the next few days.

The masts of dangerous Thames Estuary shipwreck SS Richard Montgomery survived Storm Eunice as shown in this footage recorded this afternoon (February 20) - despite the storm's winds bringing down a chimney at nearby Isle of Grain power station, forcing it to be taken off-line and closed for repairs.

However, the shipwreck's masts will now have to contend with a few more days of stormy wind and weather conditions.

Experts are concerned about corrosion on the masts, which have been in salt water for 78 years.

The UK Government are set to remove the masts this summer to prevent them falling onto the wreck's hull, which still contains 1400 tonnes of wartime explosives, and could trigger an explosion.
