Large parts of the UK have been battered by torrential rain and gale-force winds after Storm Franklin brought further travel chaos and 'danger to life' flood warnings.

Northern England has borne the brunt of the latest misery with 85 flood warnings currently in place across Yorkshire, according to the environment agency, and two 'severe flood warnings' in Greater Manchester.

A severe warning has also been issued for residents living near the River Mersey in parts of Didsbury, Manchester, where homeowners were told they may need to evacuate.

Local councillors suggested as many as 430 homes in the area might be at risk of flooding following the torrential rain on Sunday (Jan 20).

But so far, it’s understood that around seven people have decided to move to a temporary rest centre at a Mosque.

Meanwhile, in Rotherham, South Yorks., police said the storms had led the local station to resemble “the canals of Venice”.

Photos of the tracks showed the line completely submerged, with cancellations to services seen all across the North of England.
