Horrifying sea of garbage surrounds villages in North Jakarta in Indonesia

Hundreds of homes in the densely populated residential area of Kali Baru Cilincing, North Jakarta, are surrounded by a sea of garbage.

The situation in the Indonesian capital's poorest and most polluted neighbourhood has been blamed on the absence of landfill sites and rubbish collection in the slum-like settlement.

In addition to the trash generated -- and not removed -- in the area itself, vast amounts of rubbish also flows into the area from rivers that cross the city on their way to the sea in the north of the city.

Video shows waste, particularly plastic, piled up on embankments and sitting on top of water and mud, above which homes are perched on wooden stilts.

The garbage forces residents to use rickety wooden bridges to access the rest of the city and puts them at risk of diseases like dengue fever.
