A dramatic video has emerged of a World War II grenade being detonated on the River Thames in Greenwich, London, UK.

The footage, shot on Sunday night, captures the moment police carried out a controlled explosion on the apparent WWII device after it was found by a metal detecting 'mudlarking' enthusiast.

"As it happens, I was having quite a military mudlarking finds themed afternoon, having already found a couple of military buttons, and part of a cap badge, some bullets, and then.... there it was, something that looked suspiciously like a hand grenade", the filmer later wrote online.

"I have to say I was very impressed with the police and the bomb disposal team, who got there in an instant. Very professional", she added.

Mudlarking is the hobby of scavenging in river mud for items of historical interest and value, once a way for poor Londoners to try and earn a living.
