Popular Ukrainian rock musician Svyatoslav Vakarchuk, lead singer of Okean Elzy, gave an unexpected performance on the street in Kyiv on Tuesday 22 February 2022.

His impromptu gig was in support of Ukraine following Russia's decision to recognise breakaway eastern regions.

In a 55-minute speech on Russian TV, Russian president Vladimir Putin said he would recognise the so-called Luhansk People’s Republic and Donetsk People’s Republic.

Svyatoslav's speech (at 1:00 to 1:37 in the video) said: "Who believes that we are a great family, that will definitely achieve everything. And the concept of Ukraine as a European country will not be just a thought or a dream, but a reality. And now I want to sing a song that is our common message. Everything will be fine."

Earlier, during a 55-minute speech on Russian TV, Russian president Vladimir Putin recognized the independence of the so-called 'Luhansk People’s Republic' and 'Donetsk People’s Republic' and signed the relevant decrees.
