Kyiv residents volunteer to join militia after Russian assault

Residents of Kyiv were volunteering today (February 24) to join a militia to patrol the city in the aftermath of Russia's assault on Ukraine.

Police said some of the local residents might receive guns, according to the filmer of this clip.

Explosions and missile strikes have been reported near major cities in Ukraine today as Russian forces launch a major military assault.

In a televised statement earlier on Thursday morning, Russian leader Vladimir Putin said he was not planning to occupy Ukraine and called on its military to lay down their weapons.
