A nilgai struggles to break free after smashing through a car's windscreen in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh.

Footage from February 23 shows the animal's body smashed through the vehicle's windscreen with its head peeping out the car's side window.

The nilgai had darted out the woods and attempted to climb over the vehicle.

However, the animal suffered severe injuries and died at the scene.

In a heart-wrenching incident, a nilgai smashed through a car's windshield while crossing the road at speed in northern India's Uttar Pradesh on February 23.

The incident took place in the Jhadina village, located in the Garhmukteshwar region of the Hapur District.

Visuals feature the nilgai struggling. The largest Asian antelope remains stationed on the car's bonnet with its upper body smashed through the windshield and head peeping from the window on the passenger's side. Blood oozes out of its wounds as the Nilgai withers in pain, and the onlookers gather around.

The car was on its way back to Meerut when suddenly the Nilgai darted out of the woods and attempted to climb over the vehicle's bonnet, eventually smashing into the windshield.

Moreover, the antelope sustained grave injuries and died on the spot while the car's driver emerged unscathed from the incident.

Later, upon being alerted, the Forest Department personnel arrived at the spot to free the Nilgai's carcass from the car, which underwent heavy damage.
