Refugees fleeing through western Ukraine in tens of thousands were filmed sheltering in the city of Ternopil, which has converted a cathedral into a supply centre.

Footage filmed on February 27th shows the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which converted their catacombs into a bomb shelter with food and drinks.

At around 1:00pm, as church service was proceeding, air raid sirens began sounding across the city, signalling the potential danger of air attacks.

The UN estimates at least 380,000 people are fleeing across Ukraine to countries such as Poland, Moldova, the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, and other surrounding "safe areas". Many large crowds of refugees have stopped in city Ternopil on their voyage westward.

One woman, Olga Bagriy, travelled from Kyiv with her two sons and is staying in Ternopil for the time being and commented, “We decided to go when we heard the night sirens… We couldn’t sleep for the whole night.”

She added, “We have a house in the countryside near Kyiv, and we first thought that we could go there but its near Vasalkiv, its a place where they have military base and it was bombarded, and there was fights overnight, so we are happy we didn’t go there and came here.”

Igor Koval, a self-described influencer, but lately, he just wants to contribute, “I help [the priest] Roman Demush to transfer donations from point A to point B, I help the Army, and I help Ukraine.”
