An Indian student taking shelter in a hostel basement in Kharkiv, Ukraine, gives an insight into conditions and asks the Indian government to help get them out.

In video shot on Sunday 27 February, Akash Kumar Raj, a student from Bodhgaya in Bihar, explained the dire situation faced by Indian students trapped there.

The first-year medical student appealed for the Indian government to rescue them.

Kharkiv is coming under intense bombardment as Russian forces try to take the city, which has fiercely resisted their efforts.

In the video he says: "(I'm a) student in Kharkiv National Medical University of the first year. As you know was is beginning in Ukraine and today is the third day of war. And we are facing a lot of problems including a scarcity of water and shortage of food here. And we are always advised to stay in the basement of the hostel because of the horrible, lots and lots of bombing coming from the outside of the building."

He then adds: "And we are allowed only one hour to go back to our room, for mobile charging and other work. Right now I am in the hostel room and will have to return in 10 minutes because my time is over now. And the only hope is our government of India to either get us from here as soon as possible because the air condition is very worse. I will show you the condition of the basement where we are living."
