Indonesian onlookers were shocked on Sunday 27 February when a cement truck being lifted out of a hole by a crane, dramatically crashed back down when the chains holding it snapped.

But the driver of the lorry, who was inside his vehicle at the time, seemed much less worried. He calmly climbed out of his cab despite it being on its side.

The vehicle had apparently fallen into a hole when it drove over a pavement that was covering a drain -- concrete slabs that then gave way under the weight of the truck.

A crane was called in to rescue the lorry, in Agam district, north of the city of Padang in West Sumatra.

But as it was close to pulling the entire vehicle back onto land, the chain holding it up snapped and dropped the vehicle even further into the hole. Not that appeared to cause the driver of the lorry to panic.

“That driver mentality looks great. He was so calm even though he was crushed by the truck," said spectator Rinal Naluvti.

Fortunately, a second attempt to rescue the now-damaged truck was successful.

According to Nal, the cement truck had gone the wrong way, so was trying to turn around at the location.

Unfortunately, his truck went over a pavement that was covering a drain -- not strong enough to hold the weight of the vehicle, which promptly crashed into the drain below.
