Hong Kong is attempting to build Covid-19 isolation centres at breakneck speed as the territory battles an Omicron surge.

Drone footage shot on 24 February showed a site near the Kai Tak cruise terminal where one such facility is being built.

Drone footage shot on 26 February shows work to expand the existing Penny's Bay isolation centre. Trucks are seen waiting to bring in prefabricated housing and a bus can also be seen, coming to pick up people who have completed quarantine.

The territory has seen a surge in infection numbers but is attempting to mirror mainland China's strict 'Zero Covid' policy, under pressure from Beijing.

Some isolation centres built by mainland China contractors recently have provoked concern in Hong Kong after local media reported that a camp with 4,000 beds in Tsing Yi had only communal squat toilets and only one toilet for women.

Rumours of stricter lockdown measures have also driven hoarding and panic-buying in the city.
