Workers on 1 March were still battling to reopen major roads in West Pasaman in West Sumatra, Indonesia, after they were cut off in a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that hit the area on Friday

The earthquake and subsequent heavy rains have triggered a number of landslides, making the situation worse since the quake hit.

The severing of road links has severely hampered the ability of local residents to get around and obtain supplies, as well as hitting the local economy.

The Head of Bina Marga Cipta Karya and Spatial Planning of West Sumatra Province, Era Sukma Minaf said: "The local government is trying to clean up the debris of mud mixed with stone and wood, and will build an alternative road using residents' plantation land which will be levelled for approximately 50 meters long."

Many local residents have been displaced by the earthquake, landslides and subsequent disruption, now living in camps set up by the local government.

So far, 11 people have died and four are still missing after the quake and landslides. A great many houses have been damaged.
