Six people died while one is still missing after their pickup truck fell from a collapsed bridge and into a river in southern Thailand.

The ground at one end of the bridge in Narathiwat province reportedly subsided and caused the structure to collapse on February 27.

The vehicle fell belly-up and sank five metres into the water below while its seven occupants were still trapped inside. Strong currents caused by days of continuous heavy rain reportedly impeded rescue operations.

Six people, including a seven-month-old infant, were found drowned inside the pickup truck, while the driver was still missing. Officers believe the flood may have swept his body away and will continue searching until he is found.

The deceased were taken to the Sukhurin hospital for autopsies.

Meanwhile, authorities used backhoes to tow the sunken pickup back up. A sign has also been placed barring motorists from crossing the damaged bridge.

Flooding from heavy rain has hit several provinces in Thailand’s southern-most region including Narathiwat, Yala, Pattani, Songkhla, and Phattalung.
