The Indian Air Force deployed one of its transport aircraft to bolster the country's evacuation drive aiming at bringing students back from war-torn Ukraine

A C-17 transport aircraft left for Romania on March 2 with snacks and water for the students from Hindon air base.

Visuals showed the inside of the 300-seater, which was carrying the food and water.

According to Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, 26 flights will bring back the stranded students in the next three days.

The official said that apart from Bucharest and Budapest, airports in Poland and the Slovak Republic will also be used to operate evacuation flights.

So far, only private Indian carriers have been evacuating the stranded nationals from Romania and Hungary, the two countries with land borders with Ukraine on the western side. The Ukrainian airspace has been closed since February 24 following the Russian military offensive.
