Thai nationals who were evacuated from war-torn Ukraine have landed safely home in Bangkok.

The group of 38 returnees had flown in from Bucharest in Romania, and arrived at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport at 6:25 a.m. local time on March 2. They were screened for Covid-19 before being sent to a quarantine facility in line with the country’s "test and go" regulations.

Another batch of 58 Thais from Warsaw, Poland landed shortly after noon.

Kittipong Kittikajorn, director of Airports of Thailand, said: "The Suvarnabhumi Airport welcomes Thais coming back home from Ukraine. We have contacted the Ministry of Foreign affairs to fast-track their return while strictly following health protocols."

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine’s Donbas region last week. He said in a public address on February 24: ‘We decided to launch a special military action aimed at demilitarisation and denazification of Ukraine.’

Russian and Ukrainian officials began ceasefire talks on March 1 in the Republic of Belarus, a staunch Russian ally.
