This is the heartwarming moment an injured dolphin stranded on a beach was rescued.

The 5ft-long marine mammal had a bloodied wound under its belly when it was found along the shore of Homonhon Island in Eastern Samar province, the Philippines on February 9.

It was first spotted by children playing by the beach who called their neighbours for help. Fishermen then went to push the dolphin back into the water.

Resident Joe Pido Opana said: 'We found him stranded on the beach and was very weak. So we helped bring him to the water.'

The dolphin was reportedly able to swim back into the depths. Local officials were also informed about the dolphin sighting.

Staff from the local marine office said the dolphin could have been separated from its pod after becoming disoriented by passing boats.
