Five German tourists rescued after getting lost in Thai jungle
Authorities rescued five German tourists who were lost in a jungle in Thailand.
The group went hiking at the Khao Rah viewpoint in Surat Thani province on March 1 morning before a tropical storm lashed the region.
Heavy rain in the afternoon flooded the paths they used to climb the mountain, leaving them stranded in the forest.
They managed to send their coordinates to Than Sadet - Koh Phangan National Park rangers, who dispatched a rescue team to find the trapped foreigners.
After an hour of scouring the jungle, the officers found the group near the bottom of a waterfall. All of them were safe and uninjured.
Meinhardt Tom Yannick, one of the tourists, said: 'We visited the Khao Rah viewpoint at around 9 am and were climbing down at 1 pm. On our way back, there was sudden rain and flood that caused us to lose our way in the jungle.
'We were impressed with how dedicated the search team was. They were so thoughtful to also bring us mangoes when we were found.'
Surat Thani governor Witchawut Jinto had earlier warned people in the province to prepare for heavy rains.
Flooding has hit several provinces in Thailand’s southern-most region including Narathiwat, Yala, Pattani, Songkhla, Surat Thani, and Phattalung, close to the border with Malaysia.
In Malaysia, more than 12,000 residents were displaced as continuous rain swamped towns on the peninsula's east coast.
