An elderly woman spoke of her heartbreak and shock at the war in Ukraine, after her escape from the country.

Valentina Mikolaivna is from Kamianets-Podilskyi in western Ukraine. She traveled miles, first by car, then on foot, to and cross the border at Siret in Romania.

She took her two grandchildren and her daughter with her across the border.

Upon arrival in Romania she was received at a reception facility in Radauzi.

The volunteers who assisted her there are part of the humanitarian association 'Fondazione Progetto Arca'.

Ms Mikolaivna expressed her horror at war, her shock that friends in Russia -- where she once lived -- did not believe what was happening, and her concern for children.

"I don't want children to die in war. They can draw, they have talent, they have a future! The war takes away your future!"
