An isolation facility is being built in Kai Tak, Hong Kong, as the city reports the world's highest COVID-19 death rate.

The facility is set to provide an extra 20,000 beds for patients with COVID-19 self-isolating.

Hong Kong recorded 3,150 COVID-19 deaths on March 10.

As the breakneck pace of construction of new isolation camps continues, the first cabins could be spotted in the Kai Tak isolation centre currently being built near to the Kai Tak Cruise terminal. Of a design similar to those of Tsing Yi (criticized for having communal squat toilets), these new prefabricated cabins did not appear to have bars on the windows. The goal of the government is to make available about 70,000 such cabins for mildly symptomatic or asymptomatic patients who are currently self-isolating at home. Meanwhile, the Security Secretary, Chris Tang warned that anybody refusing to go to an isolation centre would be subject to prosecution, also rejecting any "choice" for the patients between the different facilities (Penny's Bay, for example has toilets and showers within the cabins).
