Mysterious aureola appears above Chinese city, wowing onlookers
A mysterious aureola appeared above Beijing on March 11, stunning locals. The white aureola appeared in the sky and lasted for around 20 minutes.
According to the local meteorological bureau, lights were being tested for the closing ceremony of the Paralympic Winter Games at the Beijing National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest, when the unusual phenomenon happened. The aureola was thought to be the reflection of the lights tested in the national stadium.
The mysterious aureola is thought to be connected with Tyndall effect, which occurs when light is scattered by particles of matter in its path. When this happens, a beam of light might become visible by illuminating dust particles.
