Footage shows an incredible engraving machine that etches customised patterns onto melons.

Staff at the Midori Melon Farm in Pathum Thani province, central Thailand, designed and built the invention themselves.

The robot can draw pretty patterns at the request of customers onto the fruits before they are harvested - making a quirky gift for friends and relatives.

Visitors can pick from a variety of designs including calligraphy typography and cartoons - or even line art portraits.

Engineer and farm owner Chaiyachet Sawetdun creates the desired pattern on computer software connected to the machine, which then carves the design onto the melons.

Midori claims to be the first farm in Thailand to be selling personally-engraved melons.

Chaiyachet said: ‘Other farms also sell made-to-order melons, but all of them are drawn by hand. I realised if you’re only drawing it manually, it limits what can be drawn on the fruit.

‘It took me almost a year to write the program and come up with a machine to engrave the melons on the farm. Customers can order in advance to have their melon delivered with the desired pattern.’
